Curran vs. Baretcurran_baret_2.jpg - 4739 Bytes
Pedro Sauer Affiliate Jeff Curran Knocks out Baret Yoshida at UCC!

Stephane Patry's UCC is one of the fastest growing and well-run MMA events. Paltry filled his first few shows with some up and coming Canadian fighters. After gaining some hard-earned experience, Patry introduced a tough challenge to the Canadian fighters by bringing in members of Team Extreme. Monte Cox's team of fighters primarily hail from Pat Miletich's school. Team Extreme has secured a foothold in the UCC by either gaining UCC titles or by earning the right to be next in line to fight the UCC champion for the title. This not being enough for Patry, he brought his show to Hawaii with the help of Monte Cox and SuperBrawl promoter, T. Jay Thompson. They have put together a fight card that could have been dubbed: "Team Hawaii versus Team Canada." Some of the best Hawaiian fighters were pitted against some of the best Canadian fighters.

The celebrities that were in the house were professional wrestler, The Rock, former boxing champ, Jesus Salud, former UFC Lightweight Champion, Jens Pulver and the man in charge of the action, this time as the referee, was none other than UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes. There was a lot of action, some impressive knockouts and a couple of upsets.

The final match of the night saw Pedro Sauer Chicago Affiliate Jeff Curran (pictured above) knock out Baret Yoshida (at 2:08 minutes in Round 2). Yoshida was an Abu Dhabi finalist who almost defeated Royler Gracie with an armbar (he had it fully extended, but Royler managed to escape, and defeated Baret on points). A few years earlier, as a purple belt, Yoshida submitted 3rd degree black belt Megaton Diaz at Abu Dhabi.

Curran, who also defeated the highly touted Bao Quatch only 3 weeks ago, represents yet again.

Way to go, Jeff!

Jeff Curran fought in the W.E.C. 4 (World Extreme Cagefighting) on August 31st at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. Jeff fought Bao Quach from Chris Brennen's club in California. The fight was action packed for the full 3/5 minute rounds. Jeff was able to dominate the Cage with his kicks and boxing skills through the 2nd and 3rd round. Bao, who is a tough competitor at the 155lb weight class, and an A-Class shooto competitor put up an good fight vs. our Pedro Sauer representative Jeff Curran who is a 145lb fighter.

Good Job to both guys! Curran represents once again!

Next for Curran is a main event bout in the Super Brawl/UCC/ Extreme Challenge event taking place in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 17,2002.

Wish him luck.

Grand Junction Pedro Sauer Affiliation Student Jeff Barney wins at
"Ring of Fire" mixed martial arts event...

Our student Jeff Barney went to Denver this past weekend on the 22nd & 23rd to compete in the "Ring of Fire" mixed martial arts event. He faced Sam McFarland. The fight did not go the distance! Jeff was able to get a great takedown on Sam, picking him high up in the air and slamming him. Jeff eventually took Sams' back and worked for a choke only to deftly switch to an armbar to win the match only half way into the second round. Jeff had been training diligently for this fight and his work ethic and dedication paid off. The Grand Junction Pedro Sauer Affiliation is so proud to have such great athletes to represent jiu-jitsu in such a positive way!

Congrats to you Jeff!

CURRAN REPRESENTS JIU-JITSU ONCE AGAIN!

Jeff Curran, Pedros main man in chicago, fought for Ultimate Athlete "Genesis"on January 26, 2002 Hammond Indiana. His opponent was a loud and obnoxious fighter from Alberta, Canada named Max Marin. Max is the ranked #1 lightweight fighter from Maximum Fighting Championships who knocked out Frank Colcher in his last bout at MFS.

As Max paraded into the ring while his interview played above on the Jumbo Tron, Jeff awaited patiently outside the walkway. Max spoke out in his interview sharing with the crowd that they will be guaranteed to see him kick, punch and even submit Jeff Curran all over the ring. As others may be intimidated by such arrogance, Curran stood patiently waiting for his name to be called. As Jeff was introduced, and his interview also began to play above on the Jumbo Tron, Jeff respectful in every word stated that he was just their to do his best and try to represent his team, his instructor Pedro Sauer and last but not least show that Jiu-Jitsu still is above the rest.

The fight began with Max Marin charging across the ring with a desperate attempt to Knock Out Curran. As every strike missed, Curran took the fight to the ground where he flawlessly attacked for submission. Sinking nearly 4 submissions in the first round, Jeff was quoted later saying: "He seemed so determined to try and hit me and he was getting tired fast, so I decided to let up and let him over do it. As far as I was concerned I was just playing a game that I knew I would win at that point. He showed his true colors during the first 10 seconds. Bad move! Oh well, better luck next time Max."

Round two began and Max was letting up on his punches a little, however ended up in a triangle that he couldn't escape. Props to Jiu-Jitsu once again! The American Flag was shined down by the laser equipment above and the excited crowd chanted USA, USA. Keep your eyes open for some more excellent fights by Jeff Curran in future events.

For information on training with Jeff Curran please contact Professor Sauer at pedro@pedrosauer.com
